“It is not pain, it is the power to birth your baby.”

Victoria Black

I always knew that I wanted to be a midwife. Before I even started my journey to become a nurse the whole process of childbearing held a special place in my heart. When I finally trained as a midwife, it just affirmed what I had always known, my place was at the family’s side when you bring new life into this world. It is a very sacred time in a person’s life, whether you are starting a new family or becoming parents again for the fifth time. It remains a blessing and should be treated with attention to detail, individualized care and sensitivity. It was through my experiences as a mother and a midwife that I wanted to go into private practice, to give others the same positive experiences that I had during my journeys into motherhood. I believe that you are the captain of your ship and should be well informed throughout your pregnancy, to make educated choices for you, your family and your baby.

“Every birth is beautiful and unique to each family. Each birth is life – changing.”

Ashley van Niekerk

Unlike many midwives, midwifery chose me. During my training I was certain that I would work in trauma or ICU. Until I witnessed my first birth as a student midwife. I stood in awe as I watched this mom tap into her inner strength and the pure joy on her face when her little one was placed on her chest. It is a feeling that I still get at every single birth that I have the privilege of attending. Building that trust with our clients during their journey into parenthood is something so special. Helping our moms realize that birth is nothing to be feared - but rather to help them believe in their power to birth their baby. Helping dad to support his partner during this life altering event, there is nothing that quite beats the look on their faces when they first lay eyes on their little ones.

“Birth asks you not to be fearless, it asks you to be brave.”

There is a phase in labour, appropriately called transition where a woman will meet her breaking point. It's during this phase that the maiden ceases to be, so that she can be reborn as a mother. Finding that inner strength that was in her all along. Being part of this very intimate and sacred process is unfathomable and so special. Emotions are high after every birth and assurance, follow up care, and careful guidance during these overwhelming moments, are why we are here. For me, there could be no role more honourable and rewarding than that of a midwife and peadiatric nurse, it encapsulates everything that I love and is a role which I feel I was made for. A midwife's job doesn't stop after delivery, its a journey to ease both mother and baby emotionally and physically into a new chapter of life. I wish to have the joy of being an advocate for women, supporting, enabling and empowering them during the most incredible time in life. I consider midwifery to be more than a job, rather a privilege and a vocation. Sr Anchen will attend to moms and babies at our Bedfordview practice.
