Each years, according to international studies, 1 – 3 babies out of each 1000 that are born will have hearing loss. In South Africa this translates to more than 300 000 babies who will be born with some sort of permanent hearing impairment.
Hearing screening is offered by audiologists at most private hospitals, and at many of the public hospitals too. It is a quick, easy and sage test which is done at the bedside and which most babies can even sleep through. Ideally it is important for all babies to be screened, and for this reason many audiologists offer to screen your baby’s hearing whilst you are still in hospital.
If your baby is not born is a hospital, or your birthing unit does not offer hearing screening, it is then recommended to have your baby’s hearing screened before he/she is 6 weeks old.
